    Beyond saying that I notice there has just been a Samba update for 9.1 and
    that it might be worth trying, can't help much more, I fear.

    Did you set up an account matching that on the Windows box on the linux box
    with smbpasswd?

    Can you ping either from either?

    If the Windows host is asking for a password I suppose that's a helpful
    sign ... BTW smbd and nmbd both produce logs, they might be worth consulting
    if you haven't already as they can tell you at what point things are failing.
    You can adjust their debug level if I remember correctly, but don't have the
    resources on hand to tell you exactly how.
