    SuSE 9.1, kernel 2.6.x
Asus A7N8X mboard (BIOS 1007; latest)
    Athlon XP 3200 Barton
    Corsair Twin-X 512x2 RAM

OS boots normally if CPU ext. Freq setting in bios is set to 100 Mhz,
but CPU at boot is reported as Athlon XP 1100MHz , and system runs slow
    (but stable).
Changing the setting to 200 MHz, CPU at boot is reported as Athlon XP
3200+ but the OS always hangs before completing bootup, with "kernel
panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,5)."

Did a lot of net searches for this problem, have seen fixes related to
memory (mem=1024k) and grub (root=/dev/hdxx) but nothing relating to
the CPU frequency. I don't understand why the kernel would react this
    way to a faster CPU.

If this is a known prob, can someone point me to a FAQ? If not, any
ideas on where I should go to resolve it?

I've tried booting from SuSE install cd. The boot hangs at different
points depending on which boot option I try, but it always hangs.

    TIA for your assistance.

    Dale
