    I have a 128M usb card formatted as ext2
    # cp /boot/message /data2
    # mv /data2/message /data2/kernel_message
    # ls /data2
    . .. kernel_message lost+found SuSE_REMOTE_X_files SuSE_REMOTE_X.html

Opened a session of konqueror as root and was able to copy a file
/boot/backup.mbr to /data2/ and rename it to barrabas.mbr, I wonder if
it's nothing as silly as permissions and owenerships, user trying to
write to a directory owned by root e.g., I suspect you may have already
checked those. As a user, I get a Permission denied rather than the
    message you reported.
    Regards
    Sid.
