[SLE] My 9.1 experience (so far) and, time to buy a real soundcard?

I just installed 9.1 (new installation, replacing 9.0, formatted everything
except my /home partition (which I'd previously converted from Reiser
to ext3, after reading the problems on this list)).

I don't recall any complaints during the install, but since then, I
tried to start Tuxracer and got told that 3D is not configured or
active. I explicitly set 3D for my old ATI rage 128 pro during
    the installation.

I tried to use some things that need sound and got an error, so
I tried YaST to configure the sound "card" (it's embedded on
the motherboard), but got a popup error message:

"An error occurred during the installation of:

    VT82C686 AC97 AUDIO CONTROLLER

The kernel module snd-via82xx for sound support
could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect
module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters."

It appears that the hardware is detected properly, but not
    configured?

Sound has worked in the past (I don't use it much, but it *has*
worked), and I have not added any new cards, nor have I made
any deliberate changes to settings. So, I can think of no reason
why there should be invalid or conflicting IO or IRQ settings.

When I installed 9.1, I generally went with what was autodetected,
with the exception of the video setting mentioned above. The names
were all correct. The only things I changed from the default install
were to check a bunch of additional packages. There were NO
    package conflicts.

Mail and filestuff and Office stuff seem to be working since the
9.1 install, and I'm browsing and downloading alright, so the
important stuff appears to work. When I get time (building
a fence with the neighbor this week), I'll download and install
xine, and see if I can play DVD movies.

Opera doesn't seem to have been included this time, so I'll
    download 7.51.

If anybody has any suggestions about the sound problem,
other than to buy a $50 SoundBlaster and disable the sound
system on the motherboard, feel free to throw suggestions.

    Regards,
    Kevin (mostly up, in Ottawa)
