I've noticed that the new scheme for handling the CD/DVD drives seems to
really slow things down. Every time I want to browse the disks, or hit a
file open dialog, the system spends a lot of time trying to read the CD/DVD
drives, even though there are no discs in either of the drives. Once that
operation is complete, it doesn't seem too bad, but it sure takes a while to
    get there.

I saw improvement by switching from the default scheme in KDE.
The default Keramik with all it's eye candy seems to slow things down.
