For grins yesterday, I thought I'd try to install Corel WordPerfect Office 2000
for Linux on my 8.2 box. Here is what I experienced.
In root, jumping to the install directory, i performed the instructed ./setup
and got back the error message cannot connect to the X server, just as I had
experienced in trying to do the install on a 7.3 box. O.K., I thought, I'll try
the other ting that didn't work on the 7.3 box, and loaded the super user file
manager, went into the setup directory on the cd and clicked on the setup icon.
Viola, the install began and ran to completion telling me that the install was
complete and ready to go. Only it said all I had to do was click on the desktop
icons and there weren't any. Did a number of whereis things but nothing offered
worked. Did a manual search through /usr where the install said all would be
placed but still, nothing worked from either clicking or from the shell. Gave up
and just for fun this morning once again did a whereis and got a good return.
From bash /usr/bin/quattropro started thing running up to a point.Below is a
record of what occurs.
dcjohan@linux:~> whereis quattropro
quattropro: /usr/bin/quattropro /usr/man/man1/quattropro.1.gz
dcjohan@linux:~> cd /usr/bin
dcjohan@linux:/usr/bin> quattropro
Notice: Using config file: /etc/fonttastic/config
Here I see the normal "No running font server was detected, I will try to start
one on this server and then wait 30 seconds for it to run. Then, this is
followed by "Unable to add the FontTastic font server to the font path. The
fontserver is probably not installed or not running.Correct the problem and try
again." Both error messages are QuattroPro error messages.
dcjohan@linux:/usr/bin> quattropro

If it is of any help, here is the contents of /etc/fonttastic/config
--------------
# font server configuration file
# $XConsortium: config.cpp,v 1.7 91/08/22 11:39:59 rws Exp $
clone-self = on
use-syslog = off
catalogue = /usr/share/fonts/userfonts,
/usr/share/fonts/wprequired
error-file = /var/log/fonttastic/fs-errors
#
# A "well-behaved" configuration file requires all of the font files
# in the specified catalogues to be valid files that the font server
# can interpret. It also requires the font file extensions indicate the
# type of font file as follows:
# .pfa or .pfb Adobe Type 1 format
# .spd Speedo font file format
# .ttf TrueType format
#
# If the font files are not well-behaved, whenever the font server is
# initialized (or updated), it must open each font file and verify its
# format. This can be very time consuming and should be avoided. If you
# are unsure of the font files installed, set well-behaved to False.
#
well-behaved = False
#
# By default, scalable outline fonts are preferred to nonscalable bitmap
# fonts. If this behaviour is undesirable, setting the "prefer-bitmaps"
# option will establish a preference for bitmap fonts.
#
# It is important to note that this option only works within a single
# font path element. That is, the scalable and nonscalable fonts must
# be in the same directory. The "catalogue" item above dictates the order
# in which font path elements are examined when matching fonts. If you
# wish to keep your bitmap fonts separate from the outline fonts, you can
# specify the preferred order in the catalogue statement.
#
prefer-bitmaps = False
# in decipoints
default-point-size = 120
default-resolutions = 75,75,100,100
port = 7102
-------------
Any and all help on how to correct the problem greatly appreciated.
