I'm a newbie looking for some installation assistance.

I've got an machine that previously had Windows 2000 on it. It's
an AMD K6 processor (500 Mhz), 256M ram, with a 9.5 Gb disk, circa 1999.

I downloaded the iso image from SuSe and burned a CD. I booted from
the CD and YaST2 came up to do the install. I let it repartition the
hard drive however it chose - it created a 500 Mb swap partition
    (/dev/hda1) and
    a 9 Gb partition for / (/dev/hda2)
YaST then went through and installed everything (a few "Packages reported
    errors", I assume
    this is sort of normal)
It then asked to reboot the system.
I said OK and let it reboot from the hard drive. It comes
    up with the

    GNU GRUB v0.94 etc..
[ Minimal BASH like line editing is supported ... etc.

    GRUB>

    and stops there.

GRUB can't seem to see the filesystem on the disk. When I run geometry,
    GRUB replies
    with

    Partition 0, Filesystem type unknown
    Partition 1,

    Running kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz gives..
Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition.

trying to set root (hd0,1) (should be /, right?) gives
Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by bios.

trying to set root (hd0,0) gives
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x82

I haven't been able to find anything in the GRUB documentation that helps.
Why can't GRUB seem to read my hard drive?

    Thanks in advance,
    Steve
