    It turns out all I have to do is issue - mount /media/sda1- in a
    terminal window as my regular user and it will mount with my user
    account having full rights and an icon will appear on the Gnome
    Desktop.

    I don't know why the sda1 entry does not show up in the disks menu but
    it's not important now that I know how to mount it.
