    I have a similar machine, AMD Athlon XP 3200+, Asus A7V600-X, 512DDR400, 1 *
WD 160GB SATA, etc..., with which I had a problem installing with SuSE 9.1.
I was able to install a dual boot , windows and linux on the same SATA disk
and boot from it once. I did the YAST update and rebooted and then the
machine did not hang, but got stuck on the reboot. I cannot now remember the
error message, but I tried it in FailSafe and rescue mode without being able
to get beyond this sticking point in the boot ( it was starting to look at
the partitions on the harddisk I believe). Windows did boot. I chickened
out of fixing this by installing an EIDE disk and put windos and linux on
there. Have not got around to finding out the problem with the SATA yet, all
in good time. I realise this is of little help but at least you have my
    sympathy.
    Cheers
    Al
