I'm not aware of any other formats for vector graphics than WMF and
EMF which are supported by both MS-Word and OpenOffice.org (in the
sense that figures are visible). I can produce SVG files directly
from ROOT (http://root.cern.ch/) but OpenOffice.org 1.1.1 cannot read
    them.

Pstoedit has been around for many years, I used it with xfig 10 years
ago ... I just didn't know it supports MS formats.

To my surprise, it converted my EPS files to EMF relatively well, I've
only noticed one wrong line. The EMF files can be imported to OOo and
are visible in the document. I'll see if the conversion is usable for
production work but, anyway, it was a good tip.
