It does work fine, but when I try to load a web page, I always have to wait a minute or so while the browser tries to resolve the address of the site; also, I often can't access mail on my pop server. I have added my more commonly used web sites to /etc/hosts as well as the pop and smtp server addresses but obviously I can't add every address. There is no difference whether or not named is running.

You might also want to disable IPV6 if you don't need it (and you
probably don't) because that definitely slows resolution. You didn't say
which version of SuSE you're using and the method is different from 9.0
to 9.1, so do a search for that in Google or in the archives for this
mailing list - it was covered quite recently.
