There are many ways how to configure things but a typical single disk
PC configuration has a master boot record (MBR) and a partition table
in the first disk sector. The partition table can be written by
fdisk, cfdisk or other programs. MBR is written during Grub or LILO
installation or can be copied via dd. The rest of the disk are
partitions with filesystems.
I think AIX uses volume management by default. LVM and EVMS have
similar function in Linux. The Administration guide describes how to
handle disks in this case.
