Having a very strange install of SuSE 9.1 with software raid 5. In short
every time I try and do and install with a software raid 5 the
installation hangs somewhere and the machine locks up. Each time at a
    different point.

Hardware dual pentium 866 on tyan tiger 133, 512m, the disk stuff is an
adaptec 39160 dual channel u160 with 3-18g scsi drives,

    Here's what I tried.

build raid 0 on 2 drives each on the same channel....OK
build raid 0 on 2 drives each on a different channel... OK
build raid 1 on 2 drives each on teh same channel.....OK
build raid 1 on 2 drives each on a different channel....OK

during all of these builds I swapped drives in and out to make sure all
3 drives are OK since the build for raid 1 and 0 only uses 2 drives and
    raid 5 need all 3.

    layout for raid 5 is
drive 1, 2, 3...17 of the 18g goes to the raid mount point /
    drive 1, remaining 1g goes to /boot
    drive 2, remaining 1g goes to /swap

I have tried using drives 1 and 2 on channel A and drive 3 on channel B
and just about any conbination of drive and channels I can think of.

once this setup is built I start the install. most of the time all goes
well for about 50-60% of the install and then the machine hangs.

    I'm out of ideas....
    Is this a valid configuration?......thanks...joe
