Did you check the Netgear router setup for any settings that need to be
adjusted? Does it make a difference when you connect the desktop directly to
the modem, if that is possible?
Otherwise I would start troubleshooting with comparing traceroutes (see 'man
traceroute' for details) to a reachable web server and to your unreachable
IMAP server.
