If your system is capable of displaying 1024x768 (which is pretty standard for a graphical boot), then edit the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst to include vga=0x317

    then run

    /sbin/mk_initrd

Just check in /etc/bootsplash/themes/SuSE/images that you have the appropriate file bootsplash-1024x768.jpg
If you want to use your own picture, then rename it to this, having backed up the original. Any time you change this image you'll have to run /sbin/mk_initrd to remake the initial ramdisk for booting.
