    Posting this for future users...

In order to get past the "unmounting disk" stage lockups in k3b and xcdroast.
I had to change the master/slave settings on my rom drives. original setting:
dvdrw on secondary as master, dvdrom on secondary as slave.
The new settings: dvdrom on secondary as master, dvdrw on secondary as slave.

After changing this and booting system yast configured dvdrom and dvdrw
(again). and I could again burn cd's as root. Following Fred's sugestion here
I used chmod +s and a chown root:cdwrite to these files after creating the
cdwrite group and adding all users I wanted burner access to it:

     /usr/bin/cdrecord
     /usr/bin/cdrdao
     /usr/X11R6/lib/xcdroast-0.98/bin/cdrecord

Thanks fred for the suggestion. I had a blonde moment...
