    Hi All,

I' ve struggled to get a stable 9.1Pro install on a new ABIT KV7, but I think
I have finally done it. The new MB from ABIT came at Bios rel 14, but just on
Aug 19 they posted rel 17 to their tech supp web site. It has been a long
time since I put up a sys with a floppy drive, but I found one and updated
the MB bios from a DOS floppy. When will we be able to update modern MBs bios
from within SUSE as easily as from Windows? I took the PC2700 (333MHz) RAM
out and put in a stick of PC3200 (400MHz) and found a nice deal plus rebate
on a nVidia 128MB AGP 8x video card. The ABIT folks recommended NOT using my
older nVidia Quadro card, since their MB is made for the newer 0.8VDC AGP
    cards.

The clean install went as smoothly as anyone could wish, w/o any special
settings i.e. no ACPI, safe settings etc. Once the initial setup was done I
was off to YASTs YOU for the first updates; I first selected only SUSE base
and YAST updates, then rebooted. Next YOU was for all the KDE related
updates, then next all the rest, except for the kernel updates and hotplug
and the hardware updates. Once those updates were on and running I used YAST
YOU to get the NVIDIA drivers. This was perfect!! I have never seen such an
easy and quick NVIDIA driver update, even on XP. Thanks SUSE! YAST H/W
    section reports 3D operational.

The new sys shows 4489.0 bogomips, and yes they do seem to be twice the CPU
GHz. It is cranking out SETI@HOME units in between 2Hrs 46M and 3.5 Hrs.
Ksetiwatch reports units processed at about 32% per Hr.

The boot msgs suggest that this hardwae and kernel are handling ACPI stuff
perfectly. I am so glad to have that ACPI mess in the past. There is no more
    "Ksoftirq" issues either.

I suspect that my earlier probs might have involved a combo DVD-ROM CD-RW
drive I used for the install and the new 2.4.7X kernel issues with IDE-SCSI.
This install I had a plain DVD-ROM drive.

This CPU (AMD XP2800) is running at 50 deg C with a no frills Heatsink/fan
unit, a few deg C cooler if SETI isn't running). Sensors were setup and
started painlessly. KDE looks and feels very nice; a lot of refinement added
    since 8.2

Ksetiwatch and GKrellm came up and just ran right the first time.

Control Center/YAST has come along nicely. I used YAST > Install/Remove to
install OPERA, and the next YOU run d/l'd and installed the new OPERA. Good
    work SUSE!

YAST has an irritating habit of sometimes opening the "Administraitor's P/W"
entry box UNDER the active window, but I only got fooled 5 or 6 times. I wish
there was a check box for "Remember this P/W". YAST still ignores a click for
the same module if you clicked, used and closed that module last time. Small
thing to be sure but it just seems wrong to have to click another module even
tho you are going to 'abort' it just to be able to start the last module
    again.

KMoonphase is working. I missed it in 8.2 (sys said it was there but I never
    saw it).
