???? Did you remove postfix, while you did not want to remove postfix? Or is
this a typo in your email??

    Is this correct, or as expected;
    # apt depends postfix
    postfix-2.0.19_20040312-11
    ............
     Conflicts: sendmail
      Conflicts: exim

    # apt depends exim
    exim-4.30-25.2
    .........
      Conflicts: sendmail
      Conflicts: <sendmail-tls>
      Conflicts: postfix

    # apt rdepends postfix
    postfix
    Reverse Depends:
      sendmail
      exim

    # apt rdepends exim
    exim
    Reverse Depends:
      postfix

    # apt install exim
    Reading Package Lists... Done
    Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
      postfix
The following NEW packages will be installed:
      exim
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 1 removed and 26 not upgraded.
Need to get 1004kB of archives.

Do you have another package that requires exim?
If so that package may mess up your rpmdb.
