It turns out that the personal disc is required and does work. In this
case though, it said my partition table was fine. Instead, what I had to
do was edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to add a section for Windows XP. The one
that worked was five lines and read:
###This is a comment before the Win XP section
title Windows XP Pro
root (hd0,1)
makeactive
chainloader +1
Keep in mind that grub numbers starting with 0, so hd0 is your first
drive and the ',1' refers to the SECOND partition. I had to do this
because it was a Dell Latitude D600 which has a first partition
containing some sort of Dell repair system, and my XP partition was
actually the second one.
