    Mike,
    Did you try running the gears as root from a shell? Probably won't
    work, unless you sign in with "sux" and not "su"! Of course, you only
    need to run it as user anyway. Did you run 3ddiag or glxinfo to see if
    direct rendering, etc are activated? Did you actually go through sax2
    to turn on 3d?
