    Depending on the resolution you require, add "vga=xyz" to the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst. For example, for 1024x768, add "vga=0x317"
    This means that you will then use the framebuffer when booting and the appropriate image file will be loaded via the initrd (these are found in /etc/bootsplash). Of course, when installing your custom kernel, you need to update the initrd and use it.

    The entry "splash=silent" or "splash=verbose" determines if you get all the fascinating boot messages or just your nice picture.
