I recently installed Suse 9.1 on the same disk of Windows XP. Yast resized
the partition and the installation went as smooth as possible.
Unfortunately after the reboot XP was not able to start (NTLDR not found).
Many people in the past had this problem. My BIOS incorrectly detects a
Maxtor 6Y08L08 (80G) as CHS 1024/255/63, while it should have been
158816/16/63, or
9964/255/63.
Suse gives a solution:
http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/05/fhassel_windows_not_booting91.html
unfortunately it didn't work, saying that the partition table was ok.
Red Hat suggest to change the partition table with sfdisk:
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2004-May/msg00908.html
I gave it a try, but with no success.
As you can imagine I was getting nervous, but Google found this:
https://adelie.ucs.ed.ac.uk/dstwiki/index.php/BootProblems
My solution was to set the BIOS to CHS (no LBA) 1024/16/63
No other change, instant success.
This makes me think that both Suse and Red Hat should try harder to
understand this XP booting problem.
