K3b loads, won't burn. Xcdroast won't go beyond the attempt to recognize
the drive before locking up & having to be killed:

    pg0: Autoprobe failed
    pg: No ATAPI device detected

sr0: CDROM not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive.

...are the various errors I get when I try to access the drive.
MPlayer, however, will play a DVD ...and I can otherwise browse CDRs w/o
any problem. The installation I did which encompassed the entire HD burned
CDs, but locked up on every 2nd or 3rd boot ...just prior to init 5; I
reinstalled on half the drive and now I cannot burn a thing. I have made no
adjustments to the CD-RW/DVD-R drive. I'm puzzled, frankly.
