    Shouldn't the INTERFACE value show what interface is being used? Perhaps
    the PCMCIA card/modem/interface has gone bottoms up?

    The fact that the valid interface name was skilled to me says that it
    couldn't talk to the interface.

    Perhaps there is nothing wrong with the network setup, just the
    hardware, be it the interface or the interface receptacle, if PCMCIA.
