[SLE] SuSE 9.2 Initial Review - Big Kudos and Few Nits

    I've been running SuSE 9.2 Pro for a few days, so I thought it might be
    helpful to report what I have found.

    First, a BIG THANK YOU to SuSE for fixing the dpt_i2o kernel module! We have a
    bunch of client sites running servers with SCSI controllers depending upon
    this module. Those boxes can now be upgraded freely when appropriate.

    Second, the fit and finish is excellent. KDE and the whole system seems
    noticeably snappier (Athlon 1.2MHz w/ 1GB RAM.) than 8.2 and 9.1.

    Third, kpilot found, set up and sync'd with my Palm Zire 31 without any hand
    fiddling of the visor module. No module recompile, modprobing nor symlink
    setup was needed. It just worked! Kudos!

    But there are a few nits (which I will report on the web site later today...)
    we found.

    1. apcupsd was apparently compiled without usb support, so the daemon won't
    talk to our APC Back UPS 350s anymore. Worked fine in 8.2...

    2. nvu, at version 0.41 was missing the CSS editor. From the nvu web site it
    looks like the CSS editor was part of that version. At Pat Shanahan's
    suggestion, we uninstalled the SuSE nvu rpm and installed the binary 0.50
    version from the nvu web site. The CSS editor now appears in the program
    menus.

    3. The KDE "Save Session" functionality seems to have some new defects when
    logging in to a fresh KDE session. First, (video card is a Matrox G450 dual
    head in traditional, 2-screen mode), the system launches gkrellm on screen
    one, even though we only run it on screen two. Second, the system won't
    launch vmware, even though it is running (with no running vm's) when we hit
    the "Save Session" button. This worked fine in 8.2 as well. We even updated
    KDE from the bundled 3.1 version to the (unsupported) 3.1.1 version to no
    avail, even using the rpms released as of yesterday.

    4. The clamav packages generate errors (we also installed amavis) when
    updating virus definitions. Freshclam complains that it can't notify clamd on
    port 3310. Ann Hopkins suggested a fix that worked in the past for her, but
    it didn't work for us. We tried both the rc3 rpms bundled with 9.2, as well
    as the plain .80 packages from the projects tree on ftp.suse.com. SuSE has
    announced that new rpms are soon to be made available via YOU, so we'll see
    what happens then. Possibly could also be a firewall configuration issue, but
    we'll wait for the new clam rpms and then test again first.

    5. The KDE Control Center Font Installer in Administrator mode now changes
    font names to all lowercase when installing third party fonts. Not a problem
    in and of itself, but to get OpenOffice to see Type1 fonts installed on the
    system (without using spadmin) automagically, OpenOffice requires that the
    *.afm files be copied into the same directory in which the font files were
    installed. We always had to do that *.afm copying manually, but now we have
    to rename the afm files to be all lowercase, which we never had to do before.
    Took us a while to figure this one out.

    That's about it so far!
