    Thanks to all that replied!

Current status is: I've downloaded and installed apt and apt-lib. Then I did
and apt-get update to sync host client repositories and finally did apt-get
upgrade, which took hours and three attempts to complete. I am now in the
process of testing my system. At least one thing (kwintv) no longer works.
If all else looks good, I will apt-get install gnucash, to get back to my
    original quest!
