Do you have anything running that works with the RPM database, such as the red
carpet daemon or similar? In 9.2, rpm was changed so if one program locked
the rpm database, it will wait until it's released and then continue
operations, but in earlier versions if the rpm database was locked, other
programs - such as yast - would just fail with an error message like you're
getting. Could be a possibility
