Try to hand the kernel the option vga=normal, or you could actually
try to specify it outright. On one of my machines that has an 18" Philips
LCD monitor I get a blank screen upon booting in the default settings and
had to put vga=0x318 into the boot loader setup to see anything before it
switches X on.
