You are in luck since I just fiddled with this and am now quite happy with
my setup. Since you messed with the settings, you may want to bring them
back to the original state before proceeding.
In your case you probably forgot to open up the firewall on port 5901 or
5801 depending on whether you want to use vncviewer or the http protocol
on your xp machine. A safer solution is to tunnel through ssh. Point your
browser to http://www.uk.research.att.com/archive/vnc/sshvnc.html and
confidently apply the recipe given there.
