    I wouldn't give up so easily. Did you try out dd_rescue? When it
    encounters an error it will jump to a different block after the bad one
    and search in both directions, i.e., forward and backwards until it hits
    another barrier, then jump again. This way you can basically recover all
    the good blocks on your disk and isolate the bad ones. You can set it to
    run for days, and it will after recovering all the good blocks try to do
    its best to work on the bad blocks as well.

    About half a year ago I had a 250GB Maxtor drive go bad on me and I was
    able to recover about 99% of my stuff despite the bad blocks being
    distributed wildly over the latter 1/3rd of the drive.
