    Thanks. That's it:

    used xev to find the keysyms for "." and keypad ","

    copied /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/Xmodmap.user to ~/.Xmodmap

    added;

    keysym KP_Separator = period

    logged out of KDE, restarted X, logged back in, it works
