I use R, at www.R-project.org, for the Stats courses I deal with. When
combined with the Rcmdr interface you have a powerrful and easy to use
package. Remember R is compatible with S so nearly all code written for S
will work with R. Also check out CRAN.org for the comprehensive archive.
