When you're looking for software in linux, your first port of call should be
http://freshmeat.net, not everything is listed there, but it's damn close
If you use konqueror, you can use the URL shortcut fm: to search freshmeat,
for example
fm:genealogy
You will find a number of hits for projects you can check out
