    That is the primary purpose of YOU, but as you've noticed, it's not the only
    one. YOU is used to distribute patches and fixes primarily, but it's also
    used for a few other things. Notably for the distribution of the nvidia
    graphics driver and in 9.3 for the multimedia packs (basically the mp3
    codec). You can think of YOU as the only official path for package
    distribution in a released version. There are other places and ways to get
    software, but YOU is the only official one.

    System Update is for wholesale updates from package repositories, for example
    from the supplementary directory on the ftp site. It's really only a shortcut
    for a couple of commands in the 'install/remove software' section, to make
    the updates simpler

    Install and Remove software is mainly for single package installation
