First, let me say I have tried searching the archives and
I have tried several suggestions found there to no avail.

    these do not work:
    startx GNOME
    startx gnome
    startxgnome

changed vitual terminals too - no joy.

    This works though:
    startxfce4 - for XFCE4 of course

Originally, kdm was my desktop default manager; however,
I changed that to gdm, but cannot perceive any difference
    in functioning.

For what its worth this is my first use of SuSe after
7 years or so with Mandrake. SuSe is nice :)
