My new APC has only a USB connection.

I browsed the APC site for ten minutes and it was like
pulling teeth to find software for Linux. At home tonight
I'll look at the one that I did find, to see if it's
    actually apcupsd or something else.

The site had fields for customer login (where you sign up
for the opportunity to receive endless junk mail -- both
dead trees and e-mail) but I never saw a site-search box
which would be the preferred way to get directly to
what I needed. Oh, wait... that would bypass all their
opportunities to sell me more stuff... what was I thinking?

My original question mentioned nut, and wondered if I'd need
to activate any system support for it, or if that was part
of the standard setup and all I'd have to do is install nut
    and it would work.

I'm accustomed to years of reading this list, where somebody
says "I installed ABC and it won't work." The reply was often
"Didn't you install/activate the ABC kernel module (or compile
in the ABC support) before installing? Now you must undo
    everything and start over..."

When I installed SuSE 9.3, I still had my old UPS and wasn't
bothering with any kind of power-handling software. Actually,
(blush) when I was originally installing and saw apcupsd
go past in the software list, I read "apCUPSd". :-)
So I probably figured that if CUPS needed it, it would be
a dependency, and otherwise it was something for special
purpose that I could ignore. I was partly right... <gdr&h>
