I'd already formatted the original SCSI discs in view to copying the data
back.
FSCK couldn't rebuild the journal and thus the disk appeared unformatted.
PITA really as it took over 12 hours to copy the files to the IDE disk and 8
hours to run FSCK, all a waste of time in the end.

You probably got a damage partition table. Something similar happened
to me when I put more memory in my old P-III notebook, and it wouldn't
boot. Took out the mem and it still woudln't boot, gave me a kernel
panic, can't mount root filesystem. Followed the instructions, was
told to run the same command, which also hosed my filesystem. The
directories were all still there, but they were empty. There was
however a lost+found directory which contained a whole bunch of randomly
named directories which had all the data in. So that's your only
hope. Unfortunately I only realised this when I did a rm -rf * and got
suspicious when it took very long, canceled it to see what it was
working so hard on.
It sounds to me like you had a hardware problem of some kind. Buggy IDE
firmware possibly, bad IDE cable possibly. Or maybe you just suffered a
power surge at the worst possible moment.
Kind regards
