This is a common problem, especially with the inbox folder, the trash folder,
and others where there are a lot of additions and deletions.
You can solve it by emptying the folder you want to fix, closing Mozilla,
backing up your Mozilla data folder (usually called Mail and located under
your profile), and deleting the three files relating to the folder in
question. If the deleted folder is Inbox, Trash, or another system folder,
Mozilla should regenerate it when you restart. If it is a user folder, you
can just recreate it. You should only need the backup if something goes
wrong.
