It seems your isp is having connection problems. Try having dialer
kinternet / ginternet
up first then open your mailer program. Click the dialer and click view
log, view data
rate and check connection if the last line in the log is not connected
you are not.
Also check the time out in your modem setup I have set mine set to 300.
By going on
the web your maintaining the connection so it does not shut down.
