    Ok, I tried opening Synaptic from terminal again (I don't know why it
    didn't give me anything the first time) and here's what it says when
    synaptic crashes:

    linux:/home/jack # synaptic

    (synaptic:7896): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_hide: assertion
    `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
    Segmentation fault
    linux:/home/jack #
