IMAP (Internet Mail Access Protocol) provides for services to store
emails in a more flexible fashion compared to POP3. With IMAP
messages are not downloaded to your local computer. You can read,
write and delete emails with an IMAP-enabled client, but all
operations take place on the remote machine. The main advantage over
other techniques is that you can do email with any IMAP client from
any machine that has access to the Internet. This especially useful
for people who work at different locations (probably with their
laptops) and get their user profile (with IMAP access configured) from
a server. With POP3 for example, unless not configured otherwise, all
mail is downloaded to the local computer and thereby removed from the
remote POP server. Another computer, your laptop for instance, will
not have access to all the mail you just downloaded.

Hope this gives you an idea of IMAP.
