    Thanks - but I already did a fresh install. I saved everything I needed on
    a separate partition, and just reinstalled. Went like a charm (at least so
    far it looks like it did :).

    Kill off your install and do a fsck on your filesystem at init 1 (telinit 1;
    fsck /dev/hda1 for example). This will eliminate any file system errors and
    then you can rule out any hard drive errors.

    If possible try to get a console, Alt-Ctrl-F10 would show most errors.
