If you're not running a DHCP server, you need to assign static
IP-addresses to both computers/networks cards. This is done in YaST.

Not really, unless you als expect to run a DHCP-server. When you move
up to a third computer and a switch or hub, you just plug in the cable,
provided that you have assigned a static address to the third computer.
Good addresses to pick are for instance 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2 and
192.168.0.3. (private range, RFC1918)
