[SLE] screensaver locked every time in KDE 3.5

ever since I changed to KDE 3.4, the screensaver password screen comes
up after I have been away for a while. I looked in the screensaver
settings, but the box is NOT checked to to use the password, so I
can't figure out how to stop it from going to the password screen.
what am I missing??
this is SUSE 10.0 updated to KDE 3.5
