[SLE] "top" command consuming lots of CPU...

Hello:
What could be the reason for "top" consuming about 80% of CPU time
whenever it is invoked?
My OS version: Linux version 2.4.21-199-default (root@xxxxxxxxxxxx)
(gcc version 3.3.1 (SuSE Linux)) #1 Fri Mar 12 08:27:41 UTC 2004 (SuSE
9.0 Pro)
