In general, JRE 1.4 and newer are designed to co-exist with each
other. JRE 1.3 is NOT and should be uninstalled unless you really
need it. The Java "executable" should have internal knowledge of
which JREs it is compatible with.
Most of my JRE experience is Windows with plug-ins so I can't say for
sure about SUSE specific issues. And I know we just did a JRE 1.4 /
JRE 1.5 co-existence test with some of our internal code.
