You're not going to get 3D to work unless you follow all the instructions they
supply to install the ATI drivers. One of those instructions is to run
fglrxconfig to create a new X config file.

I wonder if the drivers they provide will still run on 9.1 but the info they
supply should tell you that.

I *believe* you should still be using a /etc/X11/XF86Config file to run your
X system. I would make a copy of that file before doing anything.

Then follow the instructions. If things don't work right... copy over the
created XF86Config file with the saved copy.

But FOLLOW the instructions. It won't work otherwise.
