Congratulations. If grub actually loaded off the Compaq 3200 then it was
probably looking for /boot/vmlinuz on that Windows drive and got way
confused. That's where editing /boot/grub/menu.lst may have helped but
isn't necessary now that you have the controllers in their proper order on
the PCI bus.
