What is xauth data? Is this what is causing the long hang? This was

Yes, and it will be working fine again when you exit from your 'su' session

The Warning message means that the current session doesn't have any X
authentication data to send to ssh, and your prompt strongly suggests that
you are running as root. My guess is that you became root with 'su' in a
user session, so you can't even run X programs locally in that shell

This is not the case.

In more detail ...

I have one SuSE box with many users (all me). I use the ssh -X to log into
that SuSE Box from either a Red Hat box or one of two OS X boxes. ( The OS X
boxes are running Mac X Windows. From a terminal on the remote machine I log
on to the SuSE box as one of the SuSE users. I then want to bring up KMail
on the remote machine and send mail. The remote machine is always the user I
am logged on to that machine as ... never su. I have exited from the remote
shell and tried it again with the same results. As I said this was working
fine before the last update to 9.1 Pro.

Original Question ...

################################################
I did an online update of a SuSE 9.1 Pro system yesterday. I did noticed one
of the packages updated had to do with X Windows. After the upgrade when I
do a ...

ssh -X -l someuser SuSEbox

I get the login but then there is a LONG hang (like 5 min) before the shell
comes up.

salamanca:~ jna$ ssh -X -l iphouse libros
Password: @#$#@#$
Warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 forwarding.

Have a lot of fun...

Long hang here before i get the bash prompt ...

Eventually I get the bash prompt ...

iphouse@libros:~>

What is xauth data? Is this what is causing the long hang? This was working
fine before the upgrade.

All help welcome.
