No, if you don't check your mail, you don't see a thing. If you subscribe,
and then don't notice that you are not receiving the emails, and don't
investigate what is happening, then yes, you could have a problem. This
particular user never wrote a thing, at least since 2003 (incl).

The thing is, every time you do some change to the mail setup, specially
if you don't use something like kmail/mozilla/evolution to retrieve mail,
you must check if it is still working. The mail log, and the "warn" log,
is something to keep track of.

(The difference with programs like kmail or mozilla to retrieve mail,
is that these things do not bounce).

This person or his sysadmin probably did some change to filter out virus
email, and it failed, and the server (or private host) started bouncing
back emails - but not till five days had passed! He had five full days in
which he could have discovered and solved the problem before we noticed
anything.
